What "strength" means on a pair of readers
Over-the-counter reading glasses are labelled with a single number such as +1.00, +1.50, or +2.50. That number is the add power, measured in dioptres (D) β the amount of extra focusing help the lens provides at reading distance. A higher number is a stronger lens that brings near objects into focus but shrinks the clear range to a closer, narrower zone.
Readers correct one thing only: the age-related loss of near focus called presbyopia. They do not correct astigmatism, they are the same power in both eyes, and they are optically centred for an average face. For many adults in their 40s and 50s that is enough for casual reading. For others β especially anyone with a meaningful difference between the two eyes, significant astigmatism, or a distance prescription β a personalised pair from an eye exam will be noticeably more comfortable 1.

The typical age-to-strength range
Presbyopia progresses gradually, and the lens power most people need rises with age. The figures below are a population average, not a prescription β individuals vary widely, and the only way to confirm your number is to try lenses or have an exam 2.

The add power tends to plateau in the mid-60s, because by then the eye's natural lens has lost almost all of its remaining focusing flexibility 3. If your required strength keeps climbing well past that age, or one eye suddenly needs much more than the other, that is a reason to see an eye-care professional rather than to keep buying stronger drug-store readers.
How to estimate at home
A rough self-test takes under a minute:
- Hold printed text β a medicine label or this paragraph on your phone β at the distance you would naturally read it, about 35β40 cm (a comfortable arm's bend).
- Without any glasses, note whether the small print is sharp, slightly soft, or clearly blurred.
- Try the lowest reader strength that makes text crisp at that distance. If you find yourself pushing the page further away to focus, the lens is too strong; if you must bring it closer, it is too weak.
Two practical rules help when you are between sizes:
- Pick the lower power if you are unsure. A slightly weak lens keeps a wider range in focus and is easier to adapt to; the eyes do some of the work.
- Match the lens to the task, not the average. Phone and book reading sit closer than a laptop or sheet music, so screen-and-desk work often needs a slightly lower add than fine print held close.
When over-the-counter readers are not the right answer
Off-the-shelf readers are a reasonable, low-cost option for straightforward presbyopia. They are usually not the best choice when:
- The two eyes need clearly different powers, or you have uncorrected astigmatism β both cause eye strain and headaches with single-power readers 1.
- You already wear a distance prescription; you likely need progressives, bifocals, or prescription readers instead.
- You do most near work on a computer at intermediate distance, where a dedicated or progressive lens is more comfortable.
- Symptoms are recent, one-sided, or accompanied by anything beyond gradual age-related blur.
When this is not the right tool at all
A reading-strength chart assumes ordinary, slowly-progressing presbyopia. If you have sudden vision loss or blur, new flashes or floaters, a curtain or shadow across your vision, eye pain, double vision, or halos around lights with headache, do not reach for stronger readers β these can signal a problem that needs same-day care. Reading-glasses strength rises predictably with age, from roughly +1.00 in the early 40s to +2.50β3.00 by the 60s, then levels off. A home test and the age chart will get most people close, but an estimate is exactly that β it cannot measure astigmatism, the balance between your eyes, or your pupillary distance. For anything more than inexpensive readers, confirm the number at an exam.
